At its 2022 Winter Meeting, the NCHSAA Board of Directors approved a proposal presented by the NCHSTCA to expand the dual-team playoffs in men's and women's tennis, starting with the fall 2023 women's season.
The expansion brings the proportion of tennis teams making the playoffs into rough equivalence with the proportion of teams making the playoffs in other sports.
In 3A and 4A, the dual-team brackets will expand to 64 teams. In 2A, the bracket expands to 48 teams. The bracket for 1A remains at 32 teams.
The playoffs will continue to be conducted in a three-week window immediately following the end of the regular season, as follows:
- Round 1 - Wednesday of Week 1
- Round 2 - Monday of Week 2
- Round 3 - Wednesday of Week 2
- Round 4 - Monday of Week 3
- Regional Finals - Wednesday of Week 3
- State Finals - Saturday of Week 3
The individual regionals and individual state tournaments are unaffected, taking place on the Friday-Saturday of Weeks 1 & 2, respectively.
