One of the state's newest high school, Felton Grove High School in Apex, will be fielding its first women's tennis team this fall.   The Galaxy will be playing in the Triangle Six 6-A/7-A Conference.

"We had nineteen girls sign up to play tennis, and we ended up with a solid group of eleven players," said Coach Jay James.   Coach James is starting his sixth season as a women's tennis coach.  He previously coached four years at Harnett Central High School, one season at West Johnston High School, and one season at Wayne Christian School.   He has a career record of 71-28 in six seasons.

"As a team, we will be young and inexperienced with only three of our eleven players ever having played in a high school tennis match before.  We are fortunate to have one player from Holly Sprnigs High School, one from Apex High School, and one from Apex Friendship High School that played exhibition for their respective teams last season," said Coach James.

The Galaxy have been unable to practice on their new courts thus far due to. construction issues.  Coach James thanked Apex High School and Holly Springs High School for allowing the team to have workouts, practices, and tryouts at their courts.

"We have a really tough first-year schedule and will be battling with Middle Creek for the 6-A conference championship in the Triangle Six 6-A/7-A Conference.  With ten matches with teams the likes of Cardinal Gibbons (25-1), East Chapel Hill (15-4), Seaforth (13-4), Willow Spring (13-6), Holly Springs (13-8), Chapel Hill (11-7), and Riverside (10-6) we will definitely have our work cut out for us.   But I am hoping this season will lead my extremely young team, all freshmen and sophomores, to become both mentally and physically tougher.  Hoping for big things in the future!" commented Coach James.

Felton Grove High School will play the first match in school history at Seaforth High School near Pittsboro on Tuesday, August 12th at 4:30 p.m.   Seaforth was 13-4 last season overall and 10-0 in the conference and returns several players from last season's conference championship roster.
