Published: March 08, 2024

Here's how the Quad County teams have fared over the first two weeks of the season.

Wilson Fike - (3-0, 2-0) Defeated last seasons 3rd placed QCC Team South Johnston 9-0 and followed that with a 9-0 win over conference opponent Smithfield Selma.  The team dropped a total of 15 games in both matches combined which included 12 singles matches and 6 doubles matches! On Friday, they defeated 4A powerhouse New Hanover, 6-3.

CB Aycock - (3-0, 3-0) Defeated Wilson Hunt 9-0, defeated East Wake 9-0, and defeated last season's 3rd place team South Johnston 8-1.  The Falcons have won 23 singles and doubles matches combined while only dropping 1!  The Falcons travel to West Johnston in the battle of the 3-0 teams next Monday.

NCSSM-Morganton vs. S. Cauldwell

Details

It was a cool night, but at least the wind was relatively light.  The NCSSM-Morganton traveled to Granite Falls Recreation Center (the S. Caldwell courts are being re-done but have not been completed.  They do not have lights.)  Played with 4 hard courts.  A great first match opener with the expected jitters for both teams.  The match came down to #3 doubles, a match that put NCSSM in front to take a very competitive match 5-4.

Next up is Thomas Jefferson in a non-conference and then N. Buncombe followed by Patton.  NCSSM was without it's number one player.   See the MaxPrep box scores for details.

Greene Central adds youth to experience

Details

Published: March 03, 2024

The Greene Central men's varsity team began a rebuild last year, adding athletic freshmen to a thin lineup. But the young group found their way, steadily improving under Coach Tim Medlin and Assistant Coach Kenny Kornegay. By season's end, junior William Drake had won the East Regional Singles championship and advanced to the State semi-final; freshmen Sam Avent and Nick Avent had won the East Regional Doubles championship and won a match at States; and the team had risen to #9 in the final 2A poll.

NCSSM-Morganton

The NCSSM-Morganton boy’s tennis team is more excited than ever since last year's non-conference season. The Dragons are setting their goals high this season in the Western Highlands 1A conference. They are looking to play some high competition non-conference matches with surrounding school conferences as they tune up for conference play beginning March 11th.

The Dragons are returning 5 top 6 line seniors and adding 8 juniors. Practice is underway and our theme is “Iron sharpening iron”. Sparks are flying as the juniors vie for their rightful place on the team. So the goal is first to win the conference, have good representation in the regionals, represent themselves well in Dual Team and move on to as many slots as they can in the state competition.

As a seasoned tennis instructor and coach I am in awe of some of these guys with their skill sets. I thought we were good last year but we have definitely set the bar higher. What a joy for Jody Deacon and I to have the opportunity to work with these young leaders of the future.

West Johnston Lady Wildcats Tennis Update

Details
Written by: Coach Jay James
Published: October 02, 2023

Good Morning Coaches,

Since only a few have posted updates lately I would like to post another update for Week 6!  The West Johnston Lady Wildcats have won 6 matches in a row heading into Week 7 and sit at (10-5) overall and (8-4) in the very tough Quad County Conference.  We are currently tied with South Johnston for 3rd place in the conference behind the #1 3A team in the state Wilson Fike (16-1) and the #6 team in the east Wilson Hunt (13-1)!  I am very proud of the improvement the team has made and after losing 3 of the top 6 from an (8-7) team last season we are right where I hoped we would be.
